This Foundational Supplement Kit is my new Obsession

It’s been a while since I’ve done a post on supplements! I believe first and foremost in getting your vitamins and nutrients through food, however I do also believe you can’t always get everything you need from food alone. Especially as we age and bodily processes slow down, we start producing less of certain nutrients. I have found in my own experience that supplementing with high quality supplements to fill in the gaps helps significantly.

I was really drawn to this foundational kit when I learned they have over 25 years of research under their belt and after speaking with my Integrative Dr  (yes even integrative professionals see other integrative professionals, who knew!) who told me they are some of her favorite vitamins that she personally takes too! When she’s on board I know it’s good! She highly recommended the supplement kit, telling me that they are really powerful, deep detoxifiers! These particular supplements help with cleansing the body of toxins, replenish the lipids (fats) your body needs for optimal functioning, and rejuvenates the bodies phospholipids.

Phospholipids are a class of lipids (fats) that make up the outer layer of all human cells and play a key role in determining what enters and exits every cell.

I was so excited to try them after hearing all of this and they sure didn’t disappoint! I started the 3 all at once, but I usually recommend starting one vitamin at a time. Whenever starting new vitamins it is best to try one at a time so you can directly correlate the effects on your body to that specific vitamin. That being said, I noticed the effects almost immediately.

I noticed improved cognitive function, more energy, a feeling of lightness, my bowels became more formed and consistent and I noticed I was getting fuller much faster when eating. So as a result my clothes fit a little better too! I don’t know if I have physically lost weight, I haven’t weighed myself in years, I don’t believe the number is important, I go by how I feel, look and how my clothes fit.

The kit is designed to be a daily regimen of three nutrients that when taken together support cellular health and optimize cognitive as well as physical performance.

It’s also incredibly important that you know where your vitamins come from. Some companies source their vitamins from places like China, where they have different standards and regulations on products and a huge industrial waste and irrigation problem. Vitamins sourced from China often test high for heavy metals like Cadmium (a metal commonly found in batteries) and other industrial waste products.

I look for vitamin companies who have organic farms in the states or Europe. (For a deeper dive into finding the best supplements, check out this website:

BodyBio is an NSF certified American nutraceutical company that only uses the purest raw materials available, and has extremely strict quality control procedures to protect the efficacy of their supplements. They find the most clean, high quality materials available, and when possible, always from organic and non-GMO suppliers, which is incredibly important to reduce pesticide exposure. Organic has stricter regulations on pesticide usage but not all nutrients can be found in food based raw materials. Because the company was founded as a supplier of vitamins for physicians, they have always made sure to source the best material and ensure the supplements do not contain additives, preservatives, bleaching agents, or deodorants.

I have been using BodyBio’s foundational kit for about a month now and wanted to take a deeper dive into these supplements and what they do for the body!

Fats have been at the forefront of nutrition and diet discussions in recent years and for good reason. Thanks to the low fat craze of the 80’s and 90’s, people were eating less fat than ever, which we learned is the worst thing we could have done for disease prevention and brain health. Now, that we know better, we still struggle with eating the right kinds of fats. The Standard American diet is still chock full of the wrong kinds of fats. To understand this, one must also understand that Omega 6 and Omega 3 fatty acids are the bodies key to survival,  but your body can’t produce them on its own (you have to get from food).

Omega 3s act as a launch pad for hormone production, they help to prevent heart disease and strokes, may protect against cancer and are an integral part of cell membranes throughout the body. They also help reduce inflammation, improve mood and sleep, help with muscle growth, and improve insulin sensitivity.

Omega 6s on the other hand are also important and help produce hormones, and improve brain function and muscle growth. But they also create inflammation and compete with Omega 3s in the body.

It’s incredibly important to know that these two oils exist in a ratio to one another, 4:1. There is a cap on the total amount that the body can use, so they compete for space in the body. Omega 6s are inflammatory, but you still need both, so its imperative to maximize Omega 3s while minimizing Omega 6s in order to keep inflammation under control. Ideally, a person should shoot for a ratio of 4:1 (Omega 6 : Omega 3) in the body. The standard American typically eats around 12:1 up to 25:1, thanks to the rampant use of oxidized oils such as canola, soybean and cottonseed oils.

The issue with an oil like canola oil is that it is a highly processed, rancid oil that has oxidized thanks to the extraction method and you are left with an oil with an offset ratio, being too heavy on the Omega 6s. Overtime this is what contributes to inflammation and disease in the body. Avoid fats that are heavily processed or exposed to high heat, they are less stable and will oxidize or spoil.  Oxidized oil damages the DNA, causes inflammation in the heart and raises your risk for cancer.

What I love about Balance Oil is that it is unrefined, low temperature extracted to avoid oxidation and rancidity and the Omega 6 to Omega 3 ratio is in the optimal 4:1 ratio in this supplement.

The BodyBio PC, my personal favorite, is a combination of these phospholipids:

  • Phosphatidylcholine (PC) – a lipid essential for memory, found in the body in all cells.

  • Phosphatidylethanolamine (PE)- vital to mitochondrial function

  • Phospatidylinositol (PI)- supports the brain and neurotransmitters

Your brain is about 60% fat and needs good fats in order to function properly. Phosphatidylcholine in particular is the main phospholipid that makes up the cell membrane and it assists with brain and heart function, memory, mental alertness, behavior and focus.

Together these 3 lipids help to modulate inflammation, manage cytokines, manufacture (this is a good thing) and attenuate cholesterol and helps to keep diseases at bay. Inflammation is at the root of all disease, so reducing inflammation is a key role in overall health maintenance.

Butryate is a short chain fatty acid that is a potent detoxifier of ammonia and neurotoxins. It’s a biologically active fatty acid that feeds the cells that line the colon and encourages the population of friendly bacteria in the gut.
When it comes to health, it all starts with your gut and microbiome, the community of organisms made up of both good and bad bacteria living inside your body. You need a balance of both the good and bad bacteria, ideally with a higher amount of good bacteria in comparison to bad..

These good and bad microbes play a critical role in the body by helping regulate metabolism, controlling your appetite, even controlling neurological and cognitive function – thanks to the gut brain connection through the vagus nerve. When there’s an overpopulation of bad bacteria, it can lead to digestive issues, disorders, and even neurological issues. Studies are starting to connect depression, anxiety and neuropsychiatric illnesses such as ADHD, OCD, and schizophrenia to a possible imbalance in gut microflora.

Studies show Butyrate plays an important role in cognitive function because of its ability to populate and feed the gut with good bacteria. Studies also show it helps maintain intestinal permeability, which means it may play an important role in maintaining the integrity of the gut barrier. Leaky gut syndrome is on the rise in the US (most likely due to our high stress levels and poor diets), which is a condition in which the lining of the small intestine is damaged, leading to undigested food particles, bacteria and other waste products to leak through the lining into the bloodstream. Symptoms of leaky gut can range from: gastric ulcers, IBS,  IBD, allergies, chronic inflammation, autoimmune disorders, thyroid disorders, SIBO, celiac disease, parkinson’s, chronic fatigue, obesity and more.

Butyrate helps seal and maintain the gut lining to prevent leaky gut syndrome.  It’s also anti-inflammatory, encourages the liver to metabolize more efficiently, and may help with weight maintenance! It encourages leptin production, the hormone that tells your body when it’s full and to stop eating. Finally, you may notice more solid stools when taking this supplement, so people with chronic diahrrea may greatly benefit from using this as well!

The combination of these three products alongside a healthy diet and lifestyle is designed to optimize your health and cognitive function! When given the right tools to care for your cells, your body can function at it’s best leaving you feeling and looking your absolute best!
